The program was originally developed to enable Windows-based computers to remotely connect to a Unix machine, but since its early beginnings in 2000 further developments are being undertaken to include Unix-like systems, Mac OS and Mac OS X, Symbian OS and Windows Mobile.īasically, what the software does is to enable the user to work on a remote Unix machine directly from their desktop, as if the user is at the actual location of the Unix machine and not somewhere else, using a Windows machine. PuTTY is software developed and maintained by Simon Tatham whose primary role is to provide end-users with remote access to another machine through the implementation of certain network protocols such as Secure Shell or SSH, Telnet, rlogin for Unix-like operating systems, and raw Transmission Control Protocol or TCP.
